Life, one story at a time
101 Classics: In The Air Tonight
In The Air Tonight was the first single Phil Collins released as a solo artist and one of the first videos ever broadcast on the then little-known channel MTV.
It may have signalled the advent of great times for both, but the song itself was a product of a bitter divorce process between Phil and his former wife. One day he sat at Roland CR-78 drum machine and messed around with it until he got the beat right. The lyrics themselves just poured out of him; they were written down after he had sung them a couple of times.
If it’s good enough for Cadbury, it’s good enough for me.
